Tony and Monica go to Hawai'i
September 2003

20 September

After spending several days hiking and site-seeing, we wanted a nice quiet day at the beach. We started our day at 69 Beach on the Kohala coast. It's called 69 Beach because it can be found by hanging a left near telephone pole number 69 (it's now near pole 71 for reasons beyond us). We read many rave reviews of this beach in the condo journal and thought we should give it a try. We found the beach to be small and mostly a locals beach for the over-50 crowd. Ahh perfect! (seriously) We plopped ourselves under a tree and proceeded to crack open our books and later nap the morning away. We took a dip in the water which was surprisingly calm and clear. It is probably a good snorkeling beach, but we couldn't be bothered with lugging the equipment from the car. So, we happily sunbathed until nature called and forced us to move to a public beach with facilities - Hapuna State Park Beach - about 1/4 mile up the road. Hapuna is a large beach with sand as far as you can see in either direction. Lots of families and boogie boarding. We jumped in the water here, but didn't stay in very long because the undertow was rather annoying. Our entertainment was a boy of about 5 years and his father who were intent on digging deep holes in the sand and building tall sand spires. That's his surfboard pictured upright in the sand. We stayed on the beach and watched the sun set, but soon left to get cleaned up for dinner.
